Through Fresh Eyes: Work Experience at Sage & Elder

One of the most rewarding aspects of running Sage & Elder is having the opportunity to share what I do with others. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting my niece for her school work experience placement and sharing what I love doing with her. This intelligent, capable 15 year old dove headfirst into everything from networking to learning how to use design packages, bringing so much enthusiasm and a breath of fresh air to the business. I asked her to write a little bit about her time with me, and I’m so proud to share her thoughts on what she learned, the skills she developed, and what goes on behind the scenes at Sage & Elder. Here is what she had to say about her week in the business:

"I initially had difficulty finding a company that would accept me for a week of work experience, but my aunt Vicky was happy to take me on and educate me in the running of her business. Over the week, she showed me her proficiency in areas such as social media advertising, which I found incredibly fascinating as well as helpful in furthering my own business understanding. Under her guidance I created some social media graphics to further my knowledge of internet advertising. 

With her accommodating advice and expertise in advertising and editing sites, I learnt how to create professional advertising pieces for a business as well as the best ways to deliver them. Vicky taught me practical skills with patience and flexibility, throughout the whole process she was open to suggestion and change, which made the week a helpful experience without stress. 

In addition to this, I gained knowledge relating to Vicky’s specific work and her running of the company. This experience gave me significant insight into the administration of Sage and Elder as a business. Vicky attended many meetings within the week, founding relationships with clients and other companies through productive networking events, all whilst she managed to help me to understand the practices of her business and assisting me with my own work relating to it. On a visit to the Rotary Club for a meeting on local affairs which I was allowed to attend, I witnessed first hand Vicky’s conversational and organisation skills, and gained knowledge on the building of associations behind her business. Due to these experiences, I began to appreciate the work put into Sage and Elder and how personally Vicky helps her clients, the effort put into each case was greatly individual and helpful."

Having my niece with me for the week was a total joy, and I am so incredibly proud of the confidence and creativity she showed; especially when diving into creating her own graphics and joining me at the Rotary Club! It’s easy to forget how much goes into the day-to-day running of a business until you view it through someone else's eyes, and her dedication reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

A massive thank you to her for all her hard work and wonderful company; she has a fantastic mind and a very bright future ahead of her!
